Brief History of Saint Pierre and Miquelon:

Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. Today the islands are a territory of France.

The Spanish and the Portuguese had temporary settlements here as early as the 16th century. The built here mostly due to the rich fishing in the area. By the 17th century the French had built permanent settlements on the islands. Over the years the English and the French fought over the island and it changed hands several times until the French finally gained permanent control.
