Agent 007 doesn't have anything on the spy stories we have on this list. Younger readers will enjoy the stories of Chet Checko by Bruce Hale. Bruce Hale paid an author's visit to my children's elementary school and he was great. He also illustrates all of his own books. If you ever get a chance to see him at a local appearance he really makes his characters come to life when he reads his books aloud. The series is about a wise cracking Ghecko named Chet who solves mysteries. Bruce Hale was inspired to write this character when he saw a ghecko on his windshield hanging on for dear life as he drove down the highway in Hawaii.
Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh is a classic funny spy book originally published in 1964 and has also been made into a movie. Harriet likes to observe her fellow students, neighbors, etc. and keeps record of her findings in a notebook. The trouble begins for Harriet when she loses her notebook and it is read by the wrong people.
Anthony Horowitz' series called Alex Rider about a teenage spy is another great option on this list. Creative gadgets, high speed bike chases and death defying action sequences will keep you coming back for more. This series contains nine books, three of which have graphic novel adaptations.
