Everybody loves a good scare once in a while and these books are sure to give you one. One of the most popular and controversial series on this list is Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz. The controversy is over the scariness of the illustrations and whether they were too scary for kids. The original series was illustrated by Steve Gammell with terribly scary illustrations. The reprints of the series are illustrated by Bret Helquist with much less disturbing illustrations. The stories themselves are a compilation of urban legend and folklore stories. They are stories people often tell around the campfire at summer camp.

Any list of scary stories for kids would not be complete with mentioning the Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine. The original series contained 62 books released from 1992 to 1997. There are currently 164 books in this series. The books are described as scary books that are funny and the author R.L. Stine believes they are popular because of their lack of violence and drugs. The typical plot line involves a regular kid in a scary situation. Goosebumps books are enjoyable fast reads that entertain and scare at the same time.
